The NBA is prepared to begin selling advertising space on jerseys. It’s over. American professional sports are officially corrupted by corporate interests.
If things go according to plan, the NBA’s adidas jerseys will have advertising on them for the 2013-14 season. This disappointing news puts a damper on the amazing NBA season that ended just more than a month ago at AmericanAirlines Arena, with the Heat capping their championship by dousing Erik Spoelstra with Gatorade.
LeBron James, the Kia Most Valuable Player, silenced the doubters, making many Haier Plays of the Day along the way. It’s just too bad that LeBron didn’t participate in the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown at Orlando’s Amway Arena back in February. That event needed a star. The other events were better off, of course, with Kevin Love taking the Foot Locker Three-Point Challenge and Tony Parker earning the Taco Bell Skills Challenge. That was followed by superstar Kevin Durant earning the Kia NBA All-Star MVP award.
That all seems like a time capsule now from a simpler, purer age. Where did it all slip away?
Who knows. I’m just going to watch the congratulatory commercial that Nike created for James and try to remember sports as they once were.
