Omar Vizquel finishes career in No. 13

By Paul Lukas

Omar Vizquel
Omar Vizquel was back in his familiar No. 13 after Brett Lawrie traded with him for his last game.
Omar Vizquel, whose storied 24-year career came to an end yesterday, wore No. 13 for most of his time in the big leagues. The only exceptions were at the very beginning of his career with the Mariners, when he briefly wore No. 42; his 2010 and ’11 seasons with the White Sox, when he wore No. 11 because 13 was being worn by manager Ozzie Guillen; and this year with the Blue Jays, when he wore No. 17 because 13 was being worn by Brett Lawrie.

But on the last day of the season, and of Vizquel's career, Lawrie offered to switch numbers with him. Classy move, right? So for one last day, Vizquel got to wear his old number, and fans were treated to the familiar sight of Vizquel wearing No. 13.

Naturally, he singled in his final at-bat, just like Hollywood would have scripted it. No 13 jinx for him.
