Hickory Crawdads prepare for end of world
By Thomas Neumann
The Hickory Crawdads aren’t going to let a little thing like the apocalypse get them down.
Seven months from the end of the Mayan calendar, the Class A affiliate of the Texas Rangers is putting on a promotion for the ages Monday in Hickory, N.C.
“Everybody knows the world is going to end on Dec. 21, 2012,” Crawdads promotions director Jared Weymier said. “I wanted to come up with a promotion that was specific to that date, and I saw we had a game exactly seven months out.”
Here are some of the things fans can expect at Mayan Mayhem Night:
Anyone of Mayan descent gets free admission to Hickory’s doubleheader against the Kannapolis Intimidators
Since the Mayan calendar spans 5,125 years, the team will give a free ticket for a future game to every fan in attendance if the crowd exceeds 5,125.
Movie clips from films such as “Apocalypse Now,” “Armageddon,” “2012” and “The Terminator” on the stadium scoreboard
When players come to bat, there will not be walk-up music -- instead they will be accompanied by sounds of sirens, explosions and natural disasters
Free 2013 season tickets to all in attendance if the world does indeed end on Dec. 21, 2012.
