Olympic legends Angela Ruggiero and Hayley Wickenheiser have signed with EA Sports to appear in the upcoming video game, “NHL 13.” This marks the first time female athletes will appear as playable characters in a professional league simulation team sports game.

Alongside Ruggiero and Wickenheiser, “NHL 13” will also feature the likes of Hall of Famers Doug Gilmour and Jari Kurri, as well as legends Dominik Hasek, Mario Lemieux, and Wayne Gretzky.

“NHL 12” was the first game in franchise history that enabled gamers to create female characters in Be a Pro mode, as the team was hoping to generate increased representation from women’s hockey in their game after receiving a request from a 14-year-old female fan.

With the addition of Ruggiero and Wickenheiser, the “NHL” franchise continues to break new ground.

“The EA Sports ‘NHL’ franchise took a big step last year by including female characters to create a more inclusive experience for female hockey fans,” said Hayley Wickenheiser via press release. “I’m excited to be a part of ‘NHL 13’ and hope that the addition of women’s hockey legends will encourage greater participation in hockey from young women everywhere.”
