“I want this event to be perfect, so I have a little anxiety, a little stress, and, of course, a little joy,” Robinson said. “I’m all about building up this community.”
Robinson, who has been a daredevil X-Games rider for years, grew up in this area and is working hard to give back. The East Providence, R.I., Budget Commission, established in late December to keep the struggling city out of bankruptcy, decided to cut funding for all middle school sports beginning this fall.
Robinson hopes to raise more than $100,000 to help schools keep their sports.
“It means more than anything to try to help this area, which is struggling, to get them back on their feet," Robinson said. "Going back home was the best move of my life because I can give back."
That’s why Robinson created the free Family Fun Festival, which include a football skills combine, gymnastics, karate and BMX demos, a rock climbing wall and live music.
“Last year, I was hoping for 500 people to show and we had 4,000 people enjoy the day,” Robinson said. “ I can’t tell you how overwhelming it was for me to get all that support.”
An additional bonus this year will be that, working with Target, Robinson will take cabin full of campers to Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania.
“So many kids never will get this experience and we’re giving them the opportunity,” Robinson said. “I’m so taken aback about the support we’ve received.”
To enter, Providence kids can write a 300 word or less letter to Kevin on why they deserve to go to Camp Woodward. The lucky winners will be announced at the Family Fun Festival on May 20.
Send entry letters to K-Rob Foundation, P.O. Box 415, Barrington, RI 02806 by May 1. Winners will be announced at the K-Rob Family Fun Festival. Prize includes transportation from Rhode Island and a week at camp from June 10-16.
