"I love giving back and this is a win-win all the way around. When you're in a position in the public eye, it's important to go beyond the game of football," said Matthews, who soon will appear in Gillette TV commercials. "You want to continue the trend. You hope the kids look up to you and take advantage of this opportunity and then eventually get in the same position and give back to the next generation."
Matthews said he and his Packers are ready to get back on the field, trying to avenge last year's playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
"There are 31 teams who are in the same boat, ready to get on the field," Matthews said. "We have that bitter taste in our mouth. But it's a new year and a new goal. We put the past behind us. We've learned a lot of great lessons."
And teammate Donald Driver, straight off winning ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," is back -- and there haven't been any jokes made about him.
"I don't think there is any ribbing involved any time you win," Matthews said. "He put his dancing skills front and center. He really took a chance out there. I'm really happy and excited he brought the trophy back to Green Bay."
And will you ever consider it?
"I don't think I can. That's too nerve-racking for me," he said. "We'll talk in a few years. Right now, I'll stick with football, what I'm good at."
