Ben Schwartz talks 'Randy Cunningham'

9/17/2012

Actor Ben Schwartz of "Parks and Recreation" loved Disney animation so much growing up that he's just amazed he's getting the opportunity to voice the lead for “Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja" on Disney XD.

"I still remember watching 'Adventures of the Gummi Bears' in New York and the rest of the lineup in the afternoon!" said Schwartz, who grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Union College. "I auditioned for it because I'm a huge Disney fan. I thought it was a perfect fit."

The animated comedy series, which begins nightly at 7 p.m. today, follows the adventure of an unlikely hero with his super ninja suit trying to protect the world. Other voice-over actors include Andrew Caldwell (Hannah Montana), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Penguins of Madagascar) and John DiMaggio (Futurama).

"It's like I'm hanging out with my friends," said Schwartz, who previously worked with ESPN on several Kenny Mayne projects and won an Emmy for his writing for the 81st Academy Awards. "It's been a lot of fun and I'm glad I have this role."

Schwartz, who also appears on Showtime's "House of Lies" and is nearly finished writing a script for a romantic comedy movie, said he still doesn't feel he's made it.

"I have a confidence problem. I'm always worried about the next thing. I don't want to take anything for granted," Schwartz said. "I'm exactly where I want to be. If I talked to a version of myself seven years ago, he'd be so upset if I blew it now."
