Ryder Cup collapse a hit on social media

The American collapse against Europe in the Ryder Cup on Sunday stunned the golf world, and social media was there to deliver the message. The Europeans had the edge on Twitter, as well as on the course at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club. There were 17,412 mentions of @RyderCupTeamEUR over the course of the three-day event, compared to just 8,128 mentions of @RyderCupTeamUSA, according to data provided by HootSuite.

The hashtag #rydercup brought 628,948 mentions worldwide from Friday through 9:15 p.m. ET Sunday, with more than half coming from the United States (214,506) and Europe (132,642). Of those overall mentions, 363,474 came on Sunday alone.

The Twitter handle mentioned most often during the event belonged to England's Ian Poulter (@ianjamespoulter)(70,424). He had 40,111 mentions on Sunday alone as the Europeans rallied from a 10-6 deficit to win 14.5-13.5:



Poulter was followed by Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (@mcilroyrory) with 27,497 overall mentions:



Bubba Watson (@bubbawatson), often active on Twitter with more than 788,000 followers, was the top American with 18,526 mentions, earning 15,007 of those on Sunday. Watson was gracious in defeat:
