Man City opens closed-roof field in NYC

6/16/2012

English soccer club Manchester City's influence in America stretches beyond amazing television moments.

Two years after opening a rooftop soccer field for kids in Harlem, City -- fresh off winning the Premier League title -- made the place doubly special: Because the open-air field was unplayable during harsh weather, City and the United Arab Emirates embassy (owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan is part of the UAE government) enclosed the field in a sky-blue dome.

Now, after the June 6 unveiling and youth tournament, the field atop the six-story Lexington Academy -- the first of its kind for a public school, according to the club -- can be seen from miles away. Even while flying from La Guardia Airport.
