July 5, 1947: On this day 65 years ago, Larry Doby put on his Cleveland Indians uniform, took to the visitors' dugout at Comiskey Park and eventually entered the game against the Chicago White Sox as a pinch-hitter -- making Doby the first black player in American League history.

Doby went on to play 13 seasons in the league -- mostly with the Indians -- and was elected by the Veterans Committee to the Hall of Fame in 1998.
Patrick Dorsey works for SportsNation. He has worked for the Web and newspapers, had a cup of craft service coffee in film school, and played in one Division III golf tournament (he shot 105).
