Aug. 5, 2002: Amazing that it's been 10 years; on this day in 2002, beloved -- and only, at the time -- Los Angeles Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn died at age 85. Hearn normalized phrases like "slam dunk" and "air ball" while chronicling the careers of so many legends.

''There's never going to be another Chick Hearn,'' Magic Johnson said at the time. ''He's a man who will be remembered long after. Some people grow bigger than their sport, bigger than their job.''

And let's not forget: Hearn played himself in one of the best scenes from 1980s comedy, in the movie "Fletch."
Patrick Dorsey is a Los Angeles-based writer and editor for ESPN.com. He has worked for the Web and newspapers. He also played in one Division-III golf tournament (he shot 105).
