Sept. 8, 1998: Regardless of the steroid-stained aftermath, little was more thrilling back then than this day 14 years ago and the weeks leading up to it, which saw Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa jockey for position in their chase for Roger Maris' 61-home run mark.

McGwire made it first, with an out-of-the-ordinary liner over the Busch Stadium left-field wall -- off the Chicago Cubs' Steve Trachsel, with Sosa in right.
