No matter where the Nationals land -- or whether the Atlanta Braves happen to catch them to win the National League East -- there's one thing you can't take away from the city of Washington: For the first time since 1933, the nation's capital will see playoff baseball.

Yes, it's been almost 80 years since D.C. last experienced a best-of-anything series. Back then it was World-Series-and-done, and the Washington Senators -- who later became the Minnesota Twins -- went 99-53 to win the American League pennant. Their foray into baseball's finals was not fruitful -- they lost to the New York Giants -- but Washington did manage one win, and made memories that ended up having to last until 2012.

Well, now it is 2012. And the playoffs are back in the Beltway. So, Playbook takes a photographic look at the two aforementioned teams, and the players -- and presidents? -- who drove/drive them to the postseason.
