Yearbook, Sept. 29: Willie Mays' 'Catch'

Sept. 29, 1954: There have been plenty of spectacular defensive plays in baseball, but few as iconic as Willie Mays' "The Catch," caught on this day 58 years ago (about nine years before the Polo Grounds shut down).

The setting: Mays' New York Giants were tied with the Cleveland Indians 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning, and lefty Vic Wertz had worked a 2-1 count on pitcher Don Liddle with two runners aboard.

The hit: A 400-plus-foot smash by Wertz, which Mays chased down to preserve the knotted score and allow the Giants to win in 10 innings.
