Yearbook, Nov. 9: Stern named commish

By Patrick Dorsey

Nov. 9, 1983: He's on his way out, set to retire on Feb. 1, 2014, exactly 30 years after he took over as NBA commissioner.

But today we look back to a time when he was just about to be on his way in -- this day 29 years ago, when David Stern was named successor to eventual trophy namesake Larry O'Brien.

Known as one of the better league leaders in any sport -- one who has overseen many highs but a series of struggles, as well -- Stern has seen a number of stars come and go ... and a number of looks.
