Yearbook, Dec. 19: The blizzard bowl
By Patrick Dorsey
Dec. 19, 1948: The grounds crew couldn't move the tarp, so they called on players from both teams to help. No one could see the field, so officials had to estimate first downs. Heck, the game was so snow-covered, anyone who brought a shovel and a work ethic got in free.
Some (like in the previously linked video) fumed about the game being played after the steady snowfall (a reported 7.4 inches). But 28,884 people showed up to see the home team prevail on a 5-yard Steve Van Buren run in the fourth quarter.
