Yearbook, Dec. 20: Red Sox deal accepted
By Patrick Dorsey
Dec. 20, 2001: On this day 11 years ago, after a fast-escalating bidding war, a group led by then-Marlins owner John Henry -- how long ago does that seem, Miami fans? -- had its offer to buy the Boston Red Sox for nearly $700 million accepted.
Now, it wasn't finalized instantly; that didn't happen until February. But it was the first big step for an ownership group that, within three years, saw the franchise win its first World Series title in nearly nine decades.
