Yearbook, Dec. 21: Basketball begins

By Patrick Dorsey

Dec. 21, 1891: If the world ends today, it will occur on a date that another world -- a sports world, anyway -- began.

Yes, on this date 121 years ago, Dr. James Naismith penned the rules of the game, showed them to his Springfield, Mass., YMCA gym class, and had those students play this strange peach-basketed sport (for more detail, check out this Grantland story).

The final score: 1-0. But that didn't keep that first set of players from making history; in fact, they were enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959.
