Yearbook, July 7: All-American Wimbledon

By Patrick Dorsey

Billie Jean King
July 7, 1973: On this day 39 years ago, 29-year-old Billie Jean King met 18-year-old Chris Evert in the Open era's first all-American women's singles final at Wimbledon. King won in straight sets -- her fifth of six Wimbledon titles -- while Evert had to wait. (But the wait wasn't long; she claimed her first of three Wimbledon wins just a year later.)
