Yearbook, July 13: World Cup begins
By Patrick Dorsey
July 13, 1930: On this day 82 years ago, a pair of international soccer matches were played simultaneously in Uruguay: France vs. Mexico (the former won 4-1) and Belgium vs. the United States (this one went to the Americans, 3-0).
And thus the World Cup was born, with the final held July 30 at Centenario Stadium (pictured) in the capital city of Montevideo. The winner of that one? Not eventual power Argentina, but host Uruguay.
