Yearbook, Sept. 30: Clemente's 3,000th hit

By Patrick Dorsey

Sept. 30, 1972: On this day four decades ago, Roberto Clemente smacked a fourth-inning double off New York Mets pitcher Jon Matlack. It was the 3,000th hit of his Pittsburgh Pirates career, but sadly it carried more significance than that -- Clemente died in a plane crash just three months later, when trying to bring relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Needless to say, Clemente's legacy lives on. So do the images of his final regular-season at-bat.
