Yearbook, Oct. 10: Cubs ... in the Series?

By Patrick Dorsey

Oct. 10, 1945: All right, so it's common knowledge that once, long ago, the Chicago Cubs did in fact play in the World Series. Several of them, actually -- and the last game of the last one came on this day 67 years ago.

It didn't end well. With the series against the Detroit Tigers in a Wrigley Field-based seventh game, the visitors scored five in the first and cruised to a 9-3 win. This denied the Cubs their first title since 1908.

Wait 'til next year, indeed.
