Agony of Defeat: RGIII, LSU, OKC & more

By The Agony of Defeat

Losing. It hurts. Especially when the games mean so much.

But it also makes for compelling images, shots of the coaches and players as they show on their faces what they're feeling inside: the agony of defeat.

There's a blog for that, one with which Playbook is working to find some the most eye-catching photos of pain in sports each week: the aptly named Tumblr "The Agony of Defeat."

Here are the selections from the past seven days -- featuring college football heartbreak, NFL frustration and early season NBA struggles:

Robert Griffin III and Cam Newton after losing to the Carolina Panthers
Robert Griffin III went into Sunday with hopes of a win over Cam Newton and the embattled Carolina Panthers. Instead, the visitors walked away with a 21-13 win, and Griffin left disappointed and with his team at 3-6.
Eli Manning against the Pittsburgh Steelers
Eli Manning's electric start screeched to a surprising halt Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who held the reigning Super Bowl MVP to 10-of-24 passing, 125 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in a 24-20 New York Giants loss.
Matt Hasselbeck of the Tennesse Titans during a game against the Chicago Bears
Frustration reigned in Nashville on Sunday, as Matt Hasselbeck's team turned the ball over five times in a crushing 51-20 home loss to the Chicago Bears.
A Philadelphia Eagles fan during the New Orleans Saints game
While New Orleans Saints fans were celebrating a 28-13 win on "Monday Night Football," Philadelphia Eagles fans like this one saw their team slip to 3-5.
Les Miles after the LSU Tigers' loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide
Coach Les Miles, safety Craig Loston and the rest of the LSU Tigers were thisclose to beating the top-ranked/defending-champion Alabama Crimson Tide, but a late touchdown upended the upset bid at Tiger Stadium.
Boise State Broncos running back Jay Ajayi after a loss to San Diego State
Jay Ajayi and the Boise State Broncos were left feeling blue (sorry) after a 21-19 home loss to the San Diego State Aztecs that crushed their hopes of any BCS bid this year.
Kevin Harper and the Pittsburgh Panthers against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish
It almost was ecstasy for the Pittsburgh Panthers and agony for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but the latter team stayed undefeated and in the national title conversation after kicker Kevin Harper missed a potentially game-winning 33-yard field goal.
Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook after losing to the San Antonio Spurs
In the NBA, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the James Harden-less Oklahoma City Thunder experienced a last-second loss to the San Antonio Spurs (pictured), and a more surprising home defeat to the Atlanta Hawks in a 1-2 start.
Paul Pierce during his team's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks
Another team struggling early: Paul Pierce's Boston Celtics, who lost their first two games before getting a win over the lowly Washington Wizards.
Kobe Bryant during the Los Angeles Lakers - Los Angeles Clippers game
Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers got one back with a blowout of the Detroit Pistons, but earlier losses to the Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers and (seen here) the Los Angeles Clippers gave Hollywood's team worry.
Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers against the Cleveland Cavaliers
But basketball is fickle in an 82-game season, as seen by Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers in a 108-101 home loss Monday to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
