Yearbook, Nov. 7: Magic's announcement

By Patrick Dorsey

Nov. 7, 1991: On this day 21 years ago, the American sporting world effectively stopped. One of its most beloved figures, Magic Johnson, held a news conference to announce he was HIV-positive and immediately retiring from basketball.

One year ago, ESPN Films chronicled that day -- and the following 20 years -- showing the shock felt nationwide and the ensuing hope generated by Johnson as an HIV survivor, a thriving businessman (now part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers) and AIDS activist in "The Announcement."
