SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers starting middle linebacker Donald Butler was not on the field for the early portion of Wednesday’s practice, putting him in jeopardy of missing a third straight game.

Butler has been nursing a nagging groin injury, but is hopeful to make it back for San Diego’s game at Washington this weekend.

If Butler can’t go, Andrew Gachkar likely will get another start at inside linebacker, and rookie linebacker Manti Te'o will continue to wear the headset and call plays defensively.

Along with Butler, offensive tackle Mike Remmers (ankle) was not on the field for the early portion of practice.

However, several players returned to action on Wednesday, including outside linebacker Jarret Johnson (hamstring), safety Eric Weddle (toe), and offensive linemen Chad Rinehart (toe), Stephen Schilling (neck) and King Dunlap (concussion).

Outside linebacker Melvin Ingram, who remains on the physically unable to perform list, got some early work on a side field while the rest of his teammates practiced on the Chargers’ main field.
