Preseason ranking: 23 | Last Week: 17 | ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002

Losers of three straight, the San Diego Chargers fell another spot to No. 18 in this week’s rankings. Just three weeks ago, San Diego sat at a season-high No. 11 coming off the bye week and heading into an important matchup at Washington.

The Chargers can trace their struggles getting into the end zone to the team’s fall to the fringes of the AFC playoff race. The Chargers are 5-of-10 in the red zone the past three weeks (50 percent). The league average is 54.7 percent. Even worse, the Chargers are 2-of-4 in goal-line situations on offense over the past three weeks. The league average is 67.8 percent.

While San Diego hasn’t exactly played inspired defense, coach Mike McCoy built this team from an offensive mindset. And the Chargers’ inability to consistently get into the end zone, play from ahead and control tempo has put the team’s defense in adverse situations.

During San Diego’s three-game losing streak, the Chargers have led a total of 11 minutes and 30 seconds. San Diego scored an average of 20 points over the last three games, and for the season average 22.8 points a contest.
