A weekly examination of the Chargers’ ESPN.com Power Ranking:
Preseason ranking: 23 | Last Week: 12 | ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002
The San Diego Chargers held firm at No. 12 in the final Power Rankings by ESPN.com’s panel of NFL experts. Whether San Diego deserved to stay at No. 12 is debatable, based on the team’s 27-24 overtime win against a group of mostly Kansas City reserves to make the playoffs.
But a missed call by the officials or not, the Chargers are in the postseason and could make some noise with the way the offense is playing. San Diego is No. 1 in time of possession (33:35) and third-down efficiency (49 percent) and No. 5 in yards per game (393).
Where the Chargers have struggled is getting the ball into the end zone. Even with that much production on offense, San Diego averages just 25 points a contest (No. 12 in the NFL). And the Chargers face a Cincinnati defense giving up just 19 points a game (No. 5). In their regular-season meeting on Dec. 1, the Bengals held San Diego to a season-low 10 points to win 17-10 at Qualcomm Stadium.
