NFLN survey/franchise player: Chargers

1/14/2014

SAN DIEGO -- Peyton Manning's name once again topped the list of our series of survey questions polling players around the league, NFL Nation Confidential.

But this time, Manning had some competition. Asked if you had to start a franchise with one player, whom would it be, Manning nudged out his replacement in Indianapolis in Andrew Luck with 62 votes, or (19.3 percent). Luck came in second with 56 votes, or 17.5 percent.

Manning also was the clear choice in our poll as the most respected player in the NFL.

At 37 years old and in the twilight of his playing career, Manning is a curious choice as player to build a team around. Yes, Manning’s longevity and success are hard to match. But Luck’s skill set, his success in leading the Colts to two postseason appearances in his first two seasons in the NFL, and his age (24) are hard things to pass up.

San Diego players agree. Two of the 10 Chargers surveyed voted for Luck. Another two players voted for Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson as their pick to start a franchise.
