Morning links: Leader of Bolts' O-line

Good morning. Steve Hartman and Mike Costa of Sports Xtra 1360 AM radio talked with San Diego Chargers offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris in this audio link.

It’s worth a listen, as D’Alessanderis talks about how he got his start as an offensive line coach, along with the importance of teaching fundamentals and building consistency with his group in the opening days of training camp.

D’Alessandris is one of the best teachers of the game on the Chargers’ coaching staff, and it’s no wonder that his group performed better than most expected last season.

“Physical ability is very important,” D’Allessandris said. “But there has to be that mindset that you’re not going to be denied, and that you’re going to do your absolute best. And with your skill and talent, and your drive and will, you’re going to succeed.”

Here’s what I had to say about San Diego’s first-round selection, Jason Verrett: “The TCU product displayed the quickness, tenacity and physicality general manager Tom Telesco sought when selecting the 5-9 cornerback in the first round. On one play during one-on-one drills operating in press coverage, Verrett played sticky defense against rookie receiver Torrence Allen, elevating to deflect a pass on an in route. However, the Chargers are taking a cautious approach with Verrett by limiting his reps as he returns from offseason shoulder surgery.”
