Morning links: Grading free agents
By Eric D. Williams
ESPN NFL Insider Bill Polian, the former head personnel man for the Indianapolis Colts, has rated every NFL player set to hit free agency in ESPN free agent draft tracker, which you can check out here.
And according to Polian, the San Diego Chargers don’t have a lot of above-average players set to hit the market. Only one of San Diego’s 11 pending free agents earned a mark above a C grade by Polian -- guard Chad Rinehart with a B-grade.
Middle linebacker Donald Butler also earned a B-grade, but he re-signed with the Chargers last week.
According to Polian, here is a breakdown of what each letter grade is worth financially.
A: $6+ million AAV (annual average value), 3+ years guaranteed money
B: $2-6 million AAV, 2 years or fewer guaranteed money
C: $2 million or less AAV, 2 years or fewer guaranteed money
D: Minimum salary, 1 year contract
And here are the rest of the grades for San Diego’s free agents:
Several mock drafts have the Chargers selecting TCU cornerback Jason Verrett with the team’s No. 25 overall pick in this year’s draft. Verrett will participate in his team’s pro day on Thursday. Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net reports that Verrett will have surgery soon to repair an injured labrum in his shoulder. However, Pauline says he doesn’t expect the surgery to affect Verrett’s draft status. Verrett will do bench press and position drills at his pro day.
