Morning links: Bargain hunting
By Eric D. Williams
Good morning. Bill Barnwell of Grantland examines potential bargains available after the first week of free agency. One player on Barnwell’s list that could make some sense for the San Diego Chargers is Houston Texans free agent offensive lineman Wade Smith.
At 6 feet 4, 295 pounds, the 32-year-old Smith can play both guard and tackle. He’s also familiar with the zone-blocking scheme from his time with Houston. Smith could be an option as depth at interior offensive line, particularly if Rich Ohrnberber does not return in free agency.
Barnwell: “Nobody in Houston looks particularly appetizing after last year’s 2-14 campaign, but the 32-year-old Smith held down left guard on one of the league’s best lines for several years and was a Pro Bowler in 2012. He was athletic and versatile enough to play tackle earlier in his career, and while Smith might not be an every-down option there anymore, there’s still enough here to justify bringing him in as a utility lineman, especially for a zone-blocking team like the Seahawks.”
