Chargers' offseason schedule
By Eric D. Williams
I’m tying together some loose ends from news regarding the San Diego Chargers' offseason schedule announced last week.
San Diego’s offseason schedule begins on April 22. Phase 1 includes a two-week schedule limited to strength and conditioning, as well as physical rehabilitation for players returning from injuries.
The second phase of the Chargers’ offseason program lasts three weeks and includes on-field workouts. Players are allowed to get individual instruction from position coaches, and San Diego can conduct a team practice with the offense and defense on separate fields.
The final phase of San Diego’s offseason program last four weeks and is usually referred to as OTAs or organized team activities. During these practice sessions, no live contact is permitted. However, teams can compete in 7-on-7 passing periods, 9-on-7 run sessions and 11-on-11 drills.
The Chargers will hold organized team activities from May 27-29, June 2-4 and June 9-12. Organized team activities are voluntary, but players who do not attend are generally frowned upon by the coaching staff and the personnel department, unless the player has a legitimate reason for not attending.
San Diego will conclude its offseason program with a mandatory minicamp from June 17-19. The organized team activities and minicamp are not open to the public, but I will provide a report on any sessions that are open to reporters.
