Chargers chat wrap: Brandon Flowers a fit?

By Eric D. Williams

Here are some highlights from our inaugural weekly San Diego Chargers chat. You can check out the full transcript here.

Brandon (Culpeper,VA): Will the chargers release Jeromey Clary and sign Brandon Flowers?

Eric D. Williams: I still see Jeromey Clary being a part of this roster moving forward because of his experience in San Diego's offense. There's a possibility that Clary begins the season on the PUP list because of the shoulder and hip surgeries. But I still believe San Diego is a better team with Clary on it.

As for recently released Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers, I think San Diego has enough 5-10 corners on the roster. I don’t see him as an upgrade.

Nick W. (Indianapolis): What are your thoughts on King Dunlap long term LT or will we be looking for another LT because of his injury/concussion issues? How does the Chargers brass feel about him?

Williams: Dunlap played well for San Diego last season, and he turns 29 in September. So Dunlap can continue to play at a reasonably high level for a few more years. I think you bring him back in free agency when his contract is up at the end of the 2014 season if he can stay healthy and continues to play well. But left tackle is one of those positions where teams are always looking to improve the overall talent. So I could see San Diego drafting for that position in 2015 as well. I feel that D.J. Fluker is better off at right tackle long term.

Thomas (England): Interested to know how Steve Williams has been doing? I think he could be a starter next year.

Williams: Steve Williams has been one of the bright spots of San Diego’s offseason. He looks fast, and has made plays while working with the starters. He'll have an opportunity to compete for the starting corner job opposite Shareece Wright, along with Richard Marshall and Jason Verrett.

Kurt (Coronado, CA): With one of the toughest schedules in the league this year, do you believe we can get to the playoffs again?

Williams: I predicted San Diego will go 10-6 and make the playoffs for the upcoming season. The Chargers are the only team in the AFC West that returns all 11 starters from last year. I think that consistency on offense will go a long way. And I believe San Diego will be better defensively this year. The Chargers are a veteran team that will play from ahead, limit mistakes and not beat themselves.
