Aldon Smith still getting acclimated

November, 22, 2013
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Aldon Smith continues to work his way back into the San Francisco 49ers' defensive rotation.

Smith, who missed five games because he was seeking treatment for substance abuse, participated in 12 plays against Carolina and then 43 plays at New Orleans. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Friday that Smith was dealing with the flu at New Orleans and that affected his play time.

Fangio said Smith will continue to work his way into more playing time. Smith has one tackle since returning.

"I don’t know if he’s all the way back [conditionally]," Fangio said of the pass-rush star. "One thing he had, he was sick prior to the game on Sunday and was struggling with a cold and some congestion. And the medicine he was on made him kind of sick before the game. I think it was more that than his physical conditioning."
