SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers' receiving group should be much deeper this season.

Steve Johnson, Brandon Lloyd and Bruce Ellington are all potential big contributors. Their additions could make it easy to forget Quinton Patton.

But that might be a mistake.

Despite the additions, Patton is very much in the mix for the 49ers. The 2013 fourth-round pick has had a nice training camp. He shined Monday in front of 10,000 fans at Levi’s Stadium, making play after play.

"Seen a lot of good things from Quinton Patton," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I've always seen a competitive, very competitive individual and talented. Likes to practice, likes to make tough catches, etc. He's stayed healthy this entire offseason and training camp, and he’s starting to stack good practice after good practice. Consistently good. It's a great step."

Patton showed promise early last season, but he broke his foot in Week 4 and was out until late in the season. Patton flashed at times late in the year and in the postseason.

While this year's receiving group is deeper, I'd be surprised if Patton wasn't a vital part of this team. His play in training camp is only solidifying that thought.
