League honors Tramaine Brock

By Bill Williamson

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Players of the Week play.

And that’s why Tramaine Brock will continue to be a big part of the San Francisco 49ers’ defense.

The league honored Brock as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the 49ers’ 34-3 win over Houston. Brock had two interceptions in the game, including one he returned 18 yards for a touchdown on the third offensive play of the game. It set the tone for a huge night for the 49ers.

Brock will get plenty of chances to be the tone setter for San Francisco’s defense. Brock took over for the injured Nnamdi Asomugha as San Francisco’s No. 3 cornerback in Week 4. He played well against the Rams and followed up with his stunning performance against the Texans.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Brock will continue to play. Brock is a pending free agent. The 49ers would like to lock him up, but the way he is playing, Brock will likely go to the market.

As for Asomugha, it will be interesting to see what the 49ers do with a 32-year-old No. 4 cornerback for the rest of this season.
