Jonathan Goodwin mulls future

By Bill Williamson

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- There is a chance this will be Jonathan Goodwin's final season with the San Francisco 49ers.

If so, his teammates are sending him out the right way. Goodwin has been voted the team's recipient of the Ed Block Courage award, given annually to the player who exemplifies a commitment to sportsmanship and courage. Goodwin has started every game since he signed with the team in 2011.

Goodwin, 35, said retirement has crossed him mind, but he hasn't made a final decision. He is a free agent at the end of the season.

He said the fact that he doesn't have a contract adds to the equation. Still, Goodwin said he is playing at a high level and that is important.

"I wouldn't want just to hang around," Goodwin said. "We'll see what happens in the offseason."

Goodwin, who has three young boys, said family considerations will also play a part in his decision.

But I got the sense that if the 49ers want to bring back Goodwin on a short-term deal and he still feels he is can perform at a high level, Goodwin will seriously consider returning.
