Mangini has long had his eye on TE Davis
By Bill Williamson
Eric Mangini has been waiting a long time to work with Vernon Davis.
Perhaps next week he will get his chance.
Via ESPN.com's Rich Cimini, Mangini told the Hartford Courant that he almost drafted Davis with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2006 draft when Mangini was the head coach of the New York Jets.
The Jets ended up taking tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Davis went to the 49ers two picks later.
"When I was with the Jets, I really loved Vernon in the draft," Mangini said. "We were pretty close to drafting him in New York. It's funny how that kind of comes full circle."
Mangini is in his first season as the 49ers’ tight ends coach after years of concentrating on defense. He was an offensive consultant last season who focused on defensive philosophies.
Davis has stayed away from the voluntary portion of the 49ers’ offseason program because he is unhappy with his contract. He told ESPN.com last week that he hasn’t decided if he will be at the mandatory minicamp next week, although he said knows he “should" be there.
