Arkansas has been able to branch out in its recruiting under Bobby Petrino, which is a must if you're going to compete in the Western Division.
There simply aren't enough SEC-caliber football players in the state of Arkansas alone to successfully knock heads with Alabama, Auburn and LSU. But when those guys do emerge in-state, you better get them.
Petrino and the Hogs are doing just that as they're now at 11 commitments and counting for the 2011 class. The latest addition earlier this week was offensive tackle Brey Cook of Springdale, Ark. He's rated by ESPN as the No. 7 offensive tackle prospect nationally and is an ESPNU 150 member.
Arkansas was already holding a commitment from offensive guard Mitch Smothers of Springdale. Smothers is rated by ESPN as the nation's No. 5 offensive guard prospect, so it looks like the Hogs' offensive line of the future is coming along nicely.
Moreover, Cook and Smothers are two of the three ESPNU 150 prospects from the state of Arkansas this year, and they're both going to be Hogs. It's also noteworthy that Arkansas beat Oklahoma to get Cook.
The third ESPNU 150 prospect from the state of Arkansas, quarterback Kiehl Frazier of Springdale, has committed to Auburn.
Over the last four years, there have been a total of eight ESPNU 150 prospects to come out of the state of Arkansas, which dates back to the 2008 signing class. Counting Cook and Smothers, the Hogs have gotten six of the eight under Petrino.
As a comparison, the state of Alabama has produced 25 ESPNU 150 prospects from 2008-2011. Alabama landed 15 of those players and Auburn got two, which includes the players committed for the 2011 class. The state of Louisiana produced 19 ESPNU 150 prospects during that same span, and LSU was able to get 11 of them.
