My 'first-ballot' All-SEC selections

As I mentioned on my chat earlier today, the SEC purposefully failed to note which players were unanimous selections on the coaches’ preseason All-SEC team this year.

The whole Steve Spurrer/Tim Tebow snub became THE story at the SEC media days a year ago and became one giant headache for SEC officials.

However, on the preseason All-SEC team that the media picked this year, it was noted that there were no unanimous selections. According to the SEC, there were 177 ballots turned in by media members.

So on at least one of those 177 ballots, somebody didn’t have Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram as one of the two best SEC running backs.

Yes, that’s hard to figure. Actually, it’s impossible to figure unless somebody just decided he or she wasn’t going to vote for any Alabama players.

But, then, Alabama did have a league-high 12 players who made first or second team.

All this unanimous talk got me to thinking about who my unanimous All-SEC picks would be, players that are absolute no-brainers, guys that would be first-ballot locks, if you will, in voting for the Hall of Fame.

I came up with six, and they’re listed alphabetically:
  • Georgia punter Drew Butler
  • Georgia receiver A.J. Green
  • Alabama running back Mark Ingram
  • Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett
  • LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson
  • Florida center Mike Pouncey

There were a handful of others that I considered. But in each case, I could see how somebody else could make a case for them not being first team -- either they were coming off an injury, hadn’t been a full-time starter, hadn't been consistent enough or were at a position where there were a number of players all fairly close in stature.
