Forcing turnovers in the SEC

One of first-year Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s stated goals for this season is to create more turnovers.

And no wonder.

Over the past three seasons, the Bulldogs are dead last in the SEC when it comes to forcing turnovers, and it’s not even close.

Georgia has gained 54 turnovers during the 2007, 2008 and 2009 seasons. Ole Miss is 11th during that same time frame with 64 forced turnovers.

Alabama has the most forced turnovers over the past three seasons with 80. The Crimson Tide are also the only team in the league to have forced at least 24 turnovers in each of the past three seasons.

And while forcing turnovers goes hand-in-hand with playing good defense, statistics can be misleading.

For instance, Arkansas rates right behind Alabama (80) and Florida (78) in forced turnovers over the past three seasons with 76. However, the Hogs never finished better than ninth in the SEC in scoring defense over the past three seasons, and the best they did in total defense was eighth. In each of the past two seasons, they wound up last in the league in total defense.
