McGarity coming back home to Georgia

8/13/2010

Georgia has dipped into the athletic department staff of one of its fiercest rivals to find its next athletic director.

Multiple reports have Florida executive senior associate athletic director Greg McGarity being named Georgia's new athletic director at a news conference Friday afternoon.

McGarity has strong Georgia ties and seemed like an obvious choice from the beginning after the whole embarrassing ordeal with former Georgia athletic director Damon Evans, who resigned following his DUI arrest. McGarity played tennis at Georgia, graduated from Georgia and worked in the Bulldogs' athletic department before moving to Florida in 1992.

McGarity was athletic director Jeremy Foley's right-hand man at Florida, and Foley is widely viewed as one of the best and one of the most influential athletic directors in the business.
