It was circa 1996.

The only difference is that Steve Spurrier is coaching at South Carolina now, Phillip Fulmer isn't coaching anywhere, and it's been a decade since the Head Ball Coach has sniffed an SEC championship.

Nonetheless, it never gets old for Spurrier to jab at Tennessee.

During his radio call-in show Thursday, Spurrier poked fun at Tennessee's decision to buy its way out of the North Carolina series in 2011 and 2012.

"I said, 'Golly, times have changed when Tennessee doesn't want to play North Carolina in football because they're too good for them,'" Spurrier said. "That's kind of amazing."

South Carolina beat North Carolina 21-15 during the 2007 season in Chapel Hill. The two teams were supposed to play again this season in Columbia, but South Carolina allowed North Carolina to get out of that game to face LSU in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. North Carolina's return visit to face South Carolina is now scheduled for 2013.

"We're not going to bail out from playing North Carolina the way Tennessee did," Spurrier said.
