This time next week, we’ll have some actual games to talk about. For that matter, we will Friday following the South Carolina-Southern Miss game on Thursday night.
This season, we’ll review the previous weekend every Monday morning and preview the coming week. We’ll kick that off with a preview of Week 1 in the SEC.
As a rule, we’ll list games in descending order of interest/importance. All times Eastern.
THURSDAY
Southern Miss at South Carolina (7:30 p.m., ESPN): Could we see a true freshman starting at quarterback for the Gamecocks (Connor Shaw) and a true freshman starting at running back (Marcus Lattimore)? Either way, both are going to play a bunch for the Gamecocks.
SATURDAY
LSU vs. North Carolina, Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game (8 p.m., ABC): The Tigers could catch a huge break if the Tar Heels are missing as many key players as it appears they might be because of the widening NCAA investigation in Chapel Hill.
Northwestern at Vanderbilt (7:30 p.m., CSS): Give the Commodores credit. They’re one of the few SEC teams the opening week playing a real team, a bowl team from a year ago at that.
Kentucky at Louisville (3:30 p.m., ABC): A lot of compelling story lines surrounding this one. Kentucky’s Joker Phillips and Louisville’s Charlie Strong, longtime friends, make their head coaching debuts against each other.
San Jose State at Alabama (7 p.m., Pay-per-view): Any time the defending national champion plays, it’s worth watching. Plus, we get a glimpse of the new, expanded Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Miami (Ohio) at Florida (Noon, ESPN): What’s a Florida game look like without Tim Tebow at quarterback? We start to get answers this weekend.
Louisiana-Lafayette at Georgia (12:21 p.m., SEC Network): This game gets a few extra points because it’s the much anticipated debut of Georgia redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray.
Memphis at Mississippi State (7 p.m., ESPNU): We get our first look at redshirt freshman quarterback Tyler Russell, one of the more talented passers the Bulldogs have had on campus in a while.
Jacksonville State at Ole Miss (3:30 p.m., CSS): Jeremiah Masoli is getting a second chance. Will he give the Rebels a chance to get back to that nine-win plateau for a third straight season?
Tennessee-Martin at Tennessee (6 p.m., Pay-per-view): There’s always some intrigue when a new coaching era begins, something the Vols are getting used to.
Arkansas State at Auburn (7 p.m., Fox Sports Net): Getting a look at the Auburn newcomers will be fun, but it’s difficult to imagine this game being anything other than a rout.
Tennessee Tech at Arkansas (7 p.m., Pay-per-view): Bring your calculators. You’re going to need them to keep up with the Hogs’ passing yards and points.
