South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier stopped short of naming a starting quarterback for the opener, but it sounds like he’s leaning toward starting Stephen Garcia over true freshman Connor Shaw.

The same goes for sophomore running back Kenny Miles over true freshman Marcus Lattimore.

“I’ve generally always played the older guys first,” Spurrier said. “Usually, if the older guys have played well in preseason practice, we go with them to start the game. How long they’ll be in there, I don’t know.

“I never thought who starts the game is a big deal. It’s who plays most of the game.”

Spurrier said Garcia and Shaw would both play in the first half Thursday against Southern Miss and that the Gamecocks would go from there. He said it wouldn’t be the kind of deal where they’re rotating in every series, though.

“I’ve found there’s nothing wrong with playing two quarterbacks if that’s what it takes to win,” Spurrier said.
