Checking in on the Vanderbilt Commodores

Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

I'm off to Nashville to catch up with Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson and several of the players.

The Commodores are wrapping up their spring this week with some final practices after holding the Black & Gold Scrimmage last Saturday.

The quarterback race remains a battle between Larry Smith and Mackenzi Adams. At this point, it sounds like that race will probably go into preseason practice in August.

I'll be traveling for the next few hours and will check in later this afternoon from Nashville with some updates from the Vanderbilt camp.

The Commodores held their 2008 banquet last Sunday, and the team was presented with rings commemorating their 16-14 victory over Boston College in the Music City Bowl -- the school's first bowl victory since 1955.

Departing seniors Reshard Langford and George Smith received standing ovations after picking up awards. Langford received the Vanderbilt Hustle Award, and Smith, who came back from a life-threatening illness, was presented with the coaches' Dedication Award.
