First-year Vanderbilt coach James Franklin has completed his coaching staff with four defensive hires.

Franklin announced Monday that Bob Shoop will be the Commodores' defensive coordinator and also coach safeties. Shoop was known for his innovative defenses at William & Mary. Brent Pry will serve as co-defensive coordinator and coach linebackers. Pry's Georgia Southern defense last season was ranked near the top nationally in most of the defensive categories at the FCS level.

Wesley McGriff, the defensive backs coach at Miami the last four years, will coach the Vanderbilt defensive backs. Prior to mentoring the Hurricanes' defensive backs, McGriff also had coaching stops at Kansas State, Baylor and Kentucky. McGriff will also serve as Vanderbilt's recruiting coordinator.

Former Bowling Green assistant Sean Spencer will coach the Commodores' defensive line. The Bowling Green defensive front collected 40 sacks in the 2009-10 seasons under Spencer.

"I can't wait to get to work and really start preparing for spring practice and the upcoming season," Franklin said. "These four coaches bring the highest level of professionalism, intensity and desire to the purpose of winning football games at Vanderbilt.

"We intend to play an aggressive style of defense with tremendous energy and intensity. That's my expectation and the expectation of these coaches," Franklin added.
