Nine SEC teams make the cut in "new" FBS

Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

No real surprises in the draft to whittle down the FBS to 40 teams by my ESPN.com colleagues Ivan Maisel, Pat Forde and Mark Schlabach.

Nine SEC teams made the cut, and the ones I thought were in trouble (Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt) didn't make it.

Here's where the SEC teams were drafted overall:

  • No. 2: Florida

  • No. 5: LSU

  • No. 8: Alabama

  • No. 10: Georgia

  • No. 15: Tennessee

  • No. 19: Auburn

  • No. 29: Ole Miss

  • No. 33: South Carolina

  • No. 35: Arkansas

Nobody asked me, but I would have taken Auburn higher than 19th. One bad year shouldn't have dropped the Tigers that low. Look at what they've done against nationally ranked competition over the last several years. But, then, as Forde points out, you're counting on Gene Chizik to continue what Tommy Tuberville has built on the Plains over the last decade.

For some -- at least at this point -- that may be too big a leap of faith.
