AUBURN, Ala. -- So long, Auburn.
Great college town. Great people. Great hangouts and great food. I just wish I'd brought my golf clubs to play one of the Robert Trent Jones courses at Grand National.
It was the first time I'd had a chance to sit down with first-year coach Gene Chizik for an extended interview, and I found him to be comfortable, candid and not nearly as guarded as I'd heard.
I think he's growing into that position. But as we discussed Thursday, he's not going to earn an extended stay on the Plains by doubling as a standup comedian. He's got to win football games and start getting his share of the best football players in this state.
That's the way he's going to endear himself to the Auburn faithful.
I also had a chance to sit down with Auburn quarterback Chris Todd and will have piece on him coming up next week. Todd is a refreshing story and a reminder to us all that good things usually happen to people who persevere.
Speaking of the quarterback position, freshman Tyrik Rollison is really starting to come on and is getting a lot of the second-team reps. One of the Auburn coaches told me that he's exactly what you're looking for in this offense. I think you're going to see him play some this season. He's just too talented to keep off the field.
Finally, if you're looking for a neat place to eat the next time you're in Auburn, check out Niffer's Place. It's a staple for the locals, and I highly recommend the corn nuggets.
War Eagle!
