LSU scrimmage notes

LSU broke preseason camp with its second full scrimmage of the fall.

The Tigers completed their 130-snap scrimmage with the offense totaling 420 yards, with all three quarterbacks getting a good amount of work inside the Charles McClendon Practice Facility Thursday.

Jordan Jefferson completed 15 of 25 passes for 100 yards and scored a rushing touchdown with the first-team offense. Fellow senior Jarrett Lee spent time with both the No. 1 and No. 2 offense, connecting on 9 of 14 passes for 111 yards. Finally, junior college transfer Zach Mettenberger completed 6 of 11 passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Receivers Rueben Randle and James Wright were the top wideouts on the day, catching five passes each. Wright gained 80 yards, which included an acrobatic catch over a defender down to the 1-yard line, and Randle totaled 37 receiving yards.

In the running game, Michael Ford rushed for a team-high 65 yards on 11 carries, while Spencer Ware gained nearly 50 yards on 10 rushes.

“We had an extended go and I thought we had a number of guys that had big days,” coach Les Miles said. “Offensively, I thought we threw it pretty well and did a nice job of running the football. Defensively we made some big plays, especially from the line, which I thought did very well.

Safety Craig Loston recorded six tackles and an interception inside the 10-yard line. Safety Brandon Taylor added five tackles and a sack, while defensive tackle Michael Brockers had a sack and three tackles for loss. Cornerback Tyrann Mathieu collected five tackles and defensive end Sam Montgomery had a sack and a couple of tackles.

“I think we were crisper in all phases,” Miles said. “The defense tackled better and I thought we blocked the line of scrimmage better. There were a number of receptions and some really nice gains. We made progress and you can see improvement in all phases of the game.”

LSU will take Friday off and will return to practice Saturday to turn their attention to Oregon. The Tigers will have an abbreviated workout on Sunday that will focus mainly on special teams before classes start on Monday.
